World War Books

Historically our area and the community within it played a great part in the two World Wars. Find out more in the two books published by our local authors!

HDT is very proud to have supported the publication of two books written by a couple of local authors to record the brave role people of Irlam and Cadishead played in the two World Wars.

The authors Neil Drum and Pete Thomas have written:

‘A District at War’ which was published in 2010 and recorded the involvement of Irlam and Cadishead in the First World War.

‘Two Towns Go to War’ published and launched on 27th March 2014 and recorded the involvement of Irlam and Cadishead in the Second World War.

To produce the books, the authors devoted a huge amount of personal time, over a number of years, from their busy working / family lives. Their research included interviewing local residents and ex-service men and women and their families and gathering information about the heritage of the area. All of this has been recorded for posterity.

HDT funding enabled the books to be published and for copies to be sold at Hamilton Davies House, as well as Irlam and Cadishead libraries. We were also proud to host the launch event and provide promotional support for the book.
