Liverpool Road Strategy

A characterful community based around the different neighbourhood centres for the main A road through Irlam and Cadishead.

Liverpool Road is the main gateway through Irlam and Cadishead. Originally an A road, it was built to cope with commuting traffic and heavy goods vehicles. It has since been downgraded to a B road following the introduction of Cadishead Way and no longer needs to deal with the quantity or type of traffic that it was designed for.

So to consider how the different uses of Liverpool Road could be better balanced, a focus group made up of residents and businesses representing the local communities in Irlam and Cadishead was set up.

They came up with the ‘Liverpool Road Vision’ as it is called, so that by 2017 the gateway would no longer simply be a route designed for passing through. Instead there would be a characterful community based around the different neighbourhood centres. This would then benefit the communities of Irlam and Cadishead, the companies that do business there and the visitors to the area.

The idea was supported by the Irlam and Cadishead Regeneration Working Group, Salford City Council, Urban Vision and HDT.

It was agreed that four distinct and successful local centres where people want to shop and spend their time would be created, which include: Cadishead Village, Cadishead Northbank, Lower Irlam and Higher Irlam.

The Vision also suggested improved parking for cars and bikes, more pedestrian friendly crossings and better pavements. It wanted to reconnect Liverpool Road to the abundant green space in its vicinity and reintroduce vegetation and trees as it was felt an improved physical environment would increase aspirations of the area.
