The funding enabled the school to furnish and decorate the library but moreover purchase fantastic books, story sacks and puppets to make reading fun! The school were delighted to have published children’s author Tom Palmer to cut the ribbon at the official opening.

“The new library has helped the school raise the profile of reading further and has also provided them with a stimulating space for learning which can be for exciting activities or some quiet reflective story times”. Dawn Ridyard, Headteacher

A grant from HDT helped support Tree Tops Counselling Service to pupils at the Hamilton Davies Sixth Form College.

Pupils are offered 12 weeks counselling, giving them the opportunity to talk openly with a trained therapist, who listens and helps them find their own answers to problems, without judging.

£5,310 from HDT meant that the service could extend its provision within the school to meet demand.

“Unfortunately young people are faced with many stressful situations and having Tree Tops at the college gives us the opportunity to literally change the lives of some of our young people, they really DO make a difference.” Sharon Lightfoot, Inclusion Officer

“It has been a great success. There are more than 40 children that participate regularly in the after school football club and 50 children who receive gymnastic coaching throughout the year.” Jude Scrutton, Teacher and PE Coordinator

It was 15 years since the units were originally installed and they were in desperate need of an update.  The children are now able to bake, as well as make toast at ‘snack time’ every morning. The changes included a low ‘children friendly’ sink and enabled the kitchen to reach new food hygiene standards.

“It has been a fantastic improvement. The children all like to get involved with baking and cooking. Before we only had use of a microwave.”Jo McGarry, St Mary’s Deputy Head
